Biological requirements and standards for bivalve shellfish farming (Deliverable 1.1)
The first deliverable report of the ShellPlant project is a reference document identifying specific biological requirements and standards concerning bivalve shellfish farming, focusing on scallops (Pecten maximus), oysters (mainly Ostrea edulis) and carpet shell (Ruditapes decussates, Ruditapes philippinarium, Venerupis pullastra).
Moreover, the report includes data on the European bivalve market, among others a study of the Portuguese market showing customers’ preferences related to type of commodity and quality parameters. The report is a general bibliographic review which is made up of four main parts:
1) The biological and physical requirements of bivalves
2) European standards for quality of live bivalves
3) Bivalves production costs – Portugal as case study
4) European standards for legal end products
This deliverable provides the basis for development of the ShellPlant as well as baseline data for industrial validations that will take place during the project period.
